Advice for Seniors during our hurricane season:
Develope an emergency plan:
Get local emergency and evacuation information in advance. Ask local authorities if the is a community disaster/emergency plan for your area. Ask for a map of routes and make yourself familiar with where to go for a medical emergency.

Develope a communications plan with family and friends. Make sure they have your phone number and the number of nearby relatives and neighbors who can be contacted if you can't answer the phone.

Talk to family members and designate a safe place. Discuss whether or not you would be able to drive or would need someone to pick you up. In the case of Seniors living in a facility, family members should find out where their loved ones may be taken in the event of an emergency.

Stock an emergency medical and disaster kit:

Include at least a 2 week supply of medications Most Insurance companies won't pay for more than a 30 day supply, so request a vacation supply. Or you could ask your DR for an extra prescription amount for this use. Be sure to think about and include any blood sugar monitoring devices, hearing aid batteries, blood pressure cuffs, extra eyeglasses if you have a pair. Even if it is somewhat old on the prescription, something is better then nothing.

Make an extra copy of your medical records.

Your kit could include basic things, like a three day supply of water, non-perishable food, hand can opener, flashlight, portable radio, waterproof matches, paper plates and utensils, a change of clothing, a blanket, some cash, and basic hygiene products.

This will make the whole procedure less hectic and panic stricken if one prepares ahead for the worse, if it should ever happen. Change is harder for the elder then for the younger person. As the boyscouts always say"Be prepared".
