Concerning what we know, there is no miracle cure, supplement or evidence of a specific formula to reach the age of 100. However, there are some important facts to consider:

Lifestyle does matter. Especially concerning senior health. Strong family ties, healthy food, and lifelong physical activity are probably what make residents of the island of Okinawa the longest-lived population in the worlkd with an average of 81.2 years. With this perspective, lets compare our lives in USA with this population. Evercare, a company that specializes in coordinating care for seniors, made a survey for those that were 99 and older and reported these facts:

  • American centenians were surprisingly plugged into popular culture. Nearly a third watched reality tv! Some even watched MTV or another music station. One of seven has played Wii a video game, or some other game of this type.
  • Six percent have been on the internet, and four percent have listened to music on an ipod!
  • Eighty-two percent said their dietary habits had improved or stayed the same compared with 50 years ago.
  • Only 23 percent have smoked.
  • Favorite memory? 28% say their wedding day, 13% said a birth in the family, if not their own child,13% said getting to their hundredth birthday. One said his favorite memory was "when I learned to fly at age 76!"
  • Thirty-four percent said the person they would most trust to tell the truth would be their priest, rabbi, or preacher.
  • Seventy percent now live at home, either alone or with a spouse or family member.
This survey echoes other studies performed. Centenarians are forward-thinking,open for the most part to new experiences, eat generally healthy foods, don't smoke, have strong faith, and cherish their independence.

One more thought: If you don'e know a centenarian now, you will likely before too long. In may even be yourself! According to the census bureau, 80,000 people aged 100 or older are currently living. There will be, 580,000- a seven fold increase by 2040. So, perhaps many of us will be around for to wish each other a happy 100th on our birthdays!
